Youth Lessons


Baby & Me

An introduction to learning skills for confidence, safety and survival in and around the water. Parents are required to be in the water with their child. Intended for children 4 months to 2 1/2 years old. Children who are under three years of age or are not toilet trained are required to wear a swim diaper. Water exploration skills include:

  • Blow bubbles from mouth and nosse

  • Water exit and entry, assisted

  • Back and front float, assisted

  • Monkey crawl assisted

Wednesdays: 9:30am-10:00am
Wednesdays: 5:30pm-6:00pm

Swimmers will gain confidence in the water and learn basic strokes and skills. Water acclimation skills include:

  • Submerge and exit water independently

  • Front glide, assisted, to wall, 5 feet

  • Jump, push, turn grab, assisted

  • Back float, front float and roll, assisted

  • Swim, float, swim for 10 yards, assisted

For swimmers who are well adjusted to the water and want more independence. Water movement skills include:

  • Front glide, 10 feet

  • Back and front float, 20 seconds

  • Jump, push, turn grab

  • Tread water 10 seconds, near wall and exit

  • Swim, float, swim for 5 yards

Wednesdays: 6:30pm-7:00pm

Students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages. This class also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action. Water stamina skills include:

  • Swim on front, 15 yard

  • Swim on back, 15 yard

  • Jump, swim, turn, swim, grab

  • Tread water 1 minute and exit

  • Swim, float, swim for 25 yards

Stroke Introduction

School Age (Ages 5-12)

Wednesdays: 7:00pm-7:30pm

Stroke introduction introduces basic stroke technique in front and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. Stroke introduction skills include:

  • Front crawl, rotary breathing, 15 yards

  • Back crawl, 15 yards

  • Elementary backstroke, 15 yards

  • Tread water, scissor and whip kick, 1 minute

  • Breaststroke and butterfly kicks, 15 yards

Stroke Development

School Age (Ages 5-12)

Stroke development introduces breaststroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. Stroke development skills include:

  • Front crawl, bent-arm recovery, 25 yards

  • Back crawl, pull, 25 yards

  • Sidestroke, 25 yards

  • Tread water, scissor and whip kick, 2 minutes

  • Breaststroke, 25 yards

Stroke Mechanics

School Age (Ages 5-12)

Stroke mechanics refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle. Stroke mechanics skills include:

  • Front crawl, flip turn, 50 yards

  • Back crawl, pull and flip turn, 50 yards

  • Elementary backstroke or sidestroke, 50 yards

  • Tread water, retrieve object off bottom, tread 1 minute

  • Butterfly, 25 yards

Family Swim Lessons

$56 (Y-Members) $84 (Community) per child

Youth Small Group or Private Swim Lessons

$80 (Y-Members) $100 (Community) (for a series of four lessons)
Private lessons are geared toward the individual goals of the swimmer, for beginners or experienced swimmers looking to increase efficiency in a particular stroke.  Private swim lessons are available to any individual or two individuals who live in the same household, must be 3 years of age, and toilet trained. Please contact Ashley Ball at 269.731.3043 or at ashleyb@ymcasl.org for more information.

Adult Fitness Classes

Water Aerobics

Free to Members 
This water class will allow participants the opportunity to both exercise aerobically and tone in the water. The class consists of 20 – 25 minutes of aerobic level workout followed by the use of resistance tools to tone and define muscles for the remaining 20 – 25 minutes of class. It is available for all levels of fitness. Those who need to avoid impact exercise may find particular value in this type of class. Some classes may be designated as Water Boot Camp. These classes will be more intense and involve lap swimming and anaerobic work.

Gentle Stretch 

Free to Members
This class is designed for individuals to move and stretch with the use of the water. Each participant will be able to work at their own pace. The water temp does vary although we try to keep it around 83 – 85 degrees. This class is conducted in the shallow end of pool.

Adult Small Group Lessons
Swimming is a life skill as well as a great exercise and challenging sport. Our adult swim lessons provide instruction on water safety skills and will build on stroke technique and endurance while working on personal goals.

CPR, AED & First Aid Classes

Lifeguarding Class

Interested in becoming a lifeguard? The Sherman Lake YMCA is hosting 3 Lifeguard Training classes in 2019.


  • May 23-26

  • August 8-11

  • November 14-17


  • Day 1: 3:30pm-8:30pm

  • Day 2: 3:30pm-8:30pm

  • Day 3: 11:00am-5:00pm

  • Day 4: 11:00am-5:00pm

Who: Anyone interested in becoming a lifeguard who will be 16 years old by the last day of class.

Cost: $150 per person. Includes:

  • 2-year YMCA lifeguard certification

  • 1 year Basic Life Support (CPR+AED) certification

  • 2 year Basic First Aid certification

  • 2 year Emergency Oxygen Administration Certification.

Participants in classes need to be aware that there exists a risk in participating in any physical activity. It is suggested that all individuals consult their physician before beginning any fitness activities, particularly persons with any physical limitations or disabilities or who have been told by a physician to limit maximum heart rate, range of motion, blood pressure increase or other related issues.

All classes are subject to change without notice. Please check at the desk for availability. Classes must be attended regularly by an average of five people in order to continue. Classes with three or fewer participants may be cancelled at class time by the instructor.

All Water Fitness classes are intend for individuals 14 years and older. Children under the age of 14 may be permitted with the permission of the Aquatics Director and Instructor. Please call 731-3043 for class descriptions or information regarding the intensity or style of classes offered.
