A group of around 180 excited 6th graders visited Sherman Lake this week! We were more than happy to get back to our regularly scheduled program of building strong character. It gets too quiet around here without kids around!
We started building a strong community immediately. Each cabin created a “Community Commitment” and the campers weighed in with their thoughts. Everyone built their cabin atmosphere based on Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility, which reverberated throughout their stay.
The activities were nothing but highlights. We got out on Sherman Lake for some boating, built teams in Low Ropes, and learned a thing or two about positive self-talk at archery.
Perhaps the most fun activity was the Underground Railroad, a new Vicksburg favorite. Using their counselor as a guide, the campers snuck through the woods while playing the role of escaping slaves. They found some rather interestingly dressed friends to help guide them away from the bounty hunters. Finally, they arrived at Jubilee and ended up enjoying both a campfire and beautiful night.
At the end of the stay, Vicksburg students saw several classmates rewarded for their embodiment of HCRR. Our staff made a number of nominations for the kids we saw that were leaders of character among their peers. A very impressive two left Sherman Lake with certificates to come back for a week of summer camp for free!
Thanks for setting the tone for the season, Vicksburg! Take HCRR back to school with you and hopefully we’ll get to see you soon!
